Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s story “The Yellow Wallpaper” tells the story of a woman’s descent into madness. During the mid to late 1800’s, women did not have the same social status as now. “What we have to say is that all woman alike are made to be married, whether they are or not.”(Horace Bushnell, 1883) As a woman, the main character in “The Yellow Wallpaper” can only do what the society expects; but the narrator in the story is not willing to do this, and her refusal leads to her imprisonment in the room and her final insanity.

At the beginning of the story, it tells us that the narrator likes writing. Because this unusual habit the narrator has, her husband and her brother think she is sick, and diagnose her with a “temporary nervous depression — a slight hysterical tendency.”(p154)  She begins to take medicine and is forbidden to work.

The narrator goes on to indicate that women would do better to have no thoughts when she says, “John says the very worst thing I can do is to think about my condition.”(p154) Because her husband is very busy, she does not want him worried about her so much, “I would not be so silly as to make him uncomfortable just for a whim.”(p157) But all her husband does is force her to do the things which she does not want to do instead of listening to her. “I wanted one (a room) downstairs that opened on the piazza and had roses all over the window, and such pretty old-fashioned chintz hangings! But John would not hear of it.”(p155). …He says that with my imaginative power and habit of story-making, a nervous weakness like mine is sure to lead to all manner of excited fancies, and that I ought to use my will and good sense to check the tendency.”(p157) Even thought the narrator thinks writing would help her feel better, she still tries to do what her husband says, and soon admits that she becomes tired when she tries. “I don’t know why I should write this. I don’t want to. I don’t feel to. And I know John would think it absurd. But I must say what I feel and think in some way—it is such a relief!”(p160) She does not even need ask; she knows how her husband will think about her thought. “Dear John! He loves me very dearly, and hates to have me sick. I tried to have a real earnest reasonable talk with him the other day, and tell him how I wish he could let me go and make a visit to Cousin Henry and Julia….But he said I wasn’t able to go, nor able to stand it after I got there; and I did not make out a very good case of myself, for I was crying before I had finished.”(p161) The narrator’s husband is so confident in himself that he does not listen to the narrator’s feeling at all.

The narrator feels nervous all the time; she needs to keep others from knowing she is still writing, including John’s sister. “There comes John’s sister. Such a dear girl as she is, and so careful of me! I must not let her find me writing…She is a perfect and enthusiastic housekeeper, and hopes for no better profession. I verily believe she thinks it is the writing which made me sick!”(p158) From this point we also know that during this time, women  are used to being treated as just housekeepers but nothing else. Unsurprisingly, the narrator soon reports that she is feeling worse: “John says if I don’t pick up faster he shall send me to Weir Mitchell in the fall.” And “I cry at nothing, and cry most of the time.”(p159) At this point in the story, the narrator’s illness is becoming much worse.

As she becomes more ill, and stops her writing, the narrator becomes more obsessed with the wallpaper: “I’m getting really fond of the room in spite of the wallpaper. Perhaps because of the wallpaper.”(p159) The narrator begins to put more attention on the wallpaper instead of writing. “There are things in that paper that nobody knows but me, or ever will.”(p161) She adds later that she notices movement behind the paper: “It is like a woman stooping down and creeping about behind that patter.” (p161) During that time, women’s lives depends on their husbands; this is why the narrator cannot get out unless her husband lets her. The narrator’s husband loves her, but seems as if he never listens to her or cares about her feelings. Her husband is very sure the narrator is sick, and he believes himself more than his wife.

She wants leave the house, but her husband does not allow her. Because there is nothing can stimulate her, she becomes obsessed by the pattern and color of the wallpaper. “It is the strangest yellow, that wall-paper! It makes me think of all the yellow things I ever saw — not beautiful ones like buttercups, but old foul, bad yellow things. But there is something else about that paper — the smell! ... The only thing I can think of that it is like is the color of the paper! A yellow smell.” (p162) She then becomes obsessed with the mystery of what is behind the paper: “I don’t want to leave now until I have found it out.” She is focusing on the wallpaper and is not afraid anymore. She does not even want to keep the wallpaper away as she did at the beginning of the story. “I’m feeling ever so much better” (p164) “I really discovered something at last.” (p165) She begins to think that she has figured out the wallpaper’s secret, “I think that woman gets out in the daytime. And I’ll tell you why—privately—I’ve seen her! But I am here, and no person touches this paper but Me—not alive.”(p167)

Because of the unusual life the narrator has, her spirit becomes totally confused. “I quite enjoy the room, now it is bare again.” (p167) Compared with the very beginning, we can see the narrator’s thought changes a lot. In the end, she comes to believe that she is one of the women who are creeping behind the wall, “I wonder if they all come out of that wallpaper as I did?”(p168) “‘I’ve got out at last,’ said I, ‘in spite of you and Jane. And I’ve pulled off most of the paper, so you can’t put me back!’ ” (p169) She frees the woman behind the wallpaper, and becomes that woman who is bound within the wall. She locks herself in the room, because this in the only place she feels safe, and refuses to leave. “For outside you have to creep on the ground, and everything is green instead of yellow. But here I can creep smoothly on the floor, and my shoulder just fits in that long smooch around the wall, so I cannot lose my way.”(p168)

If there were more people to care about the narrator’s feeling and thoughts, she might not have gone mad. The society had all kinds of rules for women in that period of time and they will never be allowed to break the rules. The freedoms for women were poor. They could just have their poor freedoms when they were doing what the society wanted them to. That is the main reason how the narrator descent into madness. The rules for woman let the narrator felt a lot of pressures. She tried her best to do the expectations from others, but she was too tired to follow and bear. Finally, the narrator broke the wallpaper and freed the woman behind the wall. The wall in this case symbolizes the rules for women which encage them. The narrator thought she was the woman be engaged behind the wall and she freed herself from the society.
